Archive for March, 2011

Can you believe this beautiful Boulder March weather? It is unreal, but just what I needed this year. I am one of those people that just starts to feel blah after a long winter. So mild winters like this are so good for me.

This was such a lovely day for a portrait session at Chautauqua. Even though we still don’t have much green, there are signs of spring popping up everywhere. grass here and there, flowers beginning to bud. And the prairies grass on that first big hill that goes up to the flatirons is gorgeous year round.  It is hard to believe that this session was only three weeks after this session, which was in the same exact spot. Ooh, I can’t wait for everything to be lush and green! Just a few more weeks.
Caleb was such a sweet, fun baby to photograph. His dad could totally make him laugh. He was such a good sport. Most 1 year olds will only last an hour or so, and he really hung in there until the sun set. AND did I mention, this 12 month old weighs MUCH more than my 18 month old? Chubby babies are my favorite:) We did get him in his birthday suit, too at one point, it was warm enough, and those little rolls on his thighs-precious.

I have a lot more photos to post this week, so check back.

Let’s imagine what spring means to your child. Flowers, leaves, birds. Or cruising on his tricycle, wind in his hair, feeling free? Or, a winter coat being put away into the attic, short sleeves, long walks with the dog, flip flops, windows opening, tag football, the zoo…what? What does it mean to YOUR child? Go ahead and hand them your point and shoot (or phone, or ipad), and encourage them to spend a couple days just taking photos of what makes their heart sing when they start to feel those first few weeks of spring. You will LOVE what they come up with, I promise.

Here are the rules we all need to follow:

  • Let’s keep this to kids 12 and under.
  • Parents can not direct or edit, only upload and send the photo.
  • Only submit one photo, and let your kid rock it however he or she chooses.
  • Entries must be emailed to me by Sunday, April 10th, 2011 at boulderbabyphotography@gmail.com
  • Please include the name of the photo (let your kid name it-please, it is so much sweeter that way!), age, and parents’ names.

After the entry deadline I will post all the photos on Facebook. The entry with the most number of comments wins! Only one comment is allowed per person.

GRAND PRIZE: A mounted 8×10 print of your child’s photo, AND, a $200 gift card for Stacey Potter Photography

(2) Honorable Mentions: A 5×7 mounted print of your child’s photo, and a $50 gift card to Stacey Potter Photography.

Hope everyone is having a fabulous spring break! Now, go out, and let your child discover their inner artist!

It is always such an honor to photograph another photographer. And a little nerve wracking, but Emily is so gorgeous it would be hard to take a bad photo of her:) I met Emily recently on my trip to Las Vegas for the WPPI photography conference. She is my nanny’s sister friend from Denver. We took my nanny, and her sister, who is also a photographer, on our trip with us so that she could have someone to hang out with while taking care of the kids. Emily came too, and she took some AMAZING photos of me and my family in Las Vegas, and then again when we came back to Boulder. Check out her beautiful wedding photography. I just love her images of my family, and can not wait to get some canvas’s made for our family room.

So, I just have to say that Ella is THE sweetest little girl. She reminds me so much of my own Amelia. Just really delicate, happy, full of life-she even started walking at 9 months like Amelia. I really want to put every photo from this session on the blog-it is hard to choose just a couple. I will definitely put more up this week, it has just been hard to sit down at the computer and get much done. Amelia only wants her mama when she is sick.  She had a pretty good night-the stomach virus that she has is not too bad. She has hours of feeling totally fine and getting liquids down and playing, and then she cycles in to being sick again. Poor baby. And it is funny, because I was just talking to Ella’s parents about how I have been trying so hard to fatten Amelia up-just so that she can stand to lose a pound or two when she is sick. All that hard work of trying to sneak fatty foods into her meals has paid off. She just has a small frame and that is ok.

More to come! Our Zulily sale went really well, and today will be for me about tying that up. I also got a new phone! I seriously went through three phones last month. I lost my google mytouch, which was the fanciest phone I have ever owned. So, I got a cheap smart phone at Best Buy-and that night I dropped it in Amelia’s bath. SO, I went ahead and bought the google mytouch again since I had an insurance policy on the first one that allowed me to buy it at a discounted rate. I had it ONE week, and then I lost it in Las Vegas. I am pretty sure that shady guy that came up to us on the strip stole it, as T-Mobile told me that there was activity on it after I lost it, but I just can’t be sure. Last year, at the same conference, I found another photographer’s new iphone and returned it right away. I thought maybe I had some good cell phone karma from that, but no, no one returned it to me. So, this weekend I got an Iphone. It is super easy to use, and I love it. Any suggestions on how to actually hold on to a phone this time? By the way, my new number is (720) 310-0336. So call away! I will be here!

I got to photograph beautiful newborn Hazel in the hospital yesterday at 1 day old. More to come-Amelia has the stomach flu-AGAIN, so my time is so limited right now, but I just could not resist sharing these little newborn baby feet. I SO want another baby. Well, when I think about how hard dealing with a baby and the stomach virus is, not so much. But, then, I just have to look at these little feet and I change my mind. That is why they make em’ that cute-so you can get through those really tough times.

So, I do not talk about it that much. I usually don’t tell my clients about my other business, as I do not want to seem spammy.  Photography is truly my first love. Other than being with my two little ones, I am never happier than when I am behind the camera and capturing moments that really mean something. But, six years ago, after my son was born, I created the Karma Baby Sling. It is a super easy to use baby carrier that allows you to carry your newborn, infant, or toddler in 5 easy carrying positions (can you tell how many thousands of times I have said THAT sentence:). We make them in organic and designer fabrics, BUT, we are moving towards all organic.  We were asked to feature our slings on Zulily.com, and realized it was the perfect opportunity to move out all of our old non-organic inventory and begin to manufacture ONLY organic slings.

It has been a super exciting morning. A good sales day on our regular site would be to sell like 15 slings. Zulily is selling 1 every MINUTE! It is crazy! They are very discounted, and that is why, but still. I am sitting here watching the sales behind the scenes and my jaw keeps dropping. I am excited to see a thousand new babies being loved and carried in the sling I created.

So, here are a few of our first images for Karma Baby. That first one is of Elijah, 8 months, and I. He was such a sweetheart! The third one is of Elijah and I when he was 2 years old. We wore him in the sling ALL the time until he was about 2 1/2. He was just the kind of baby that loved being close to me all the time. Amelia, my second, is the kind of baby that loves to be down and roaming around-and getting in to things. Though, to be honest, at 18 months now, we still have to put her to bed in the “night-night sling.”

Either way, I just wanted to share this other part of my life with everyone today.

xoxo stacey

It was so great seeing these beautiful little children again! I could not believe how big Connor has gotten, just since last spring. I want you to scroll up to the header at the top of my blog. You see that teeny little baby? That is Connor! He was such an average weight when he was born (newborn photos here), and then the next time I saw him, when I did his family photos 6 months later, he was huge! Really, you have to click on the link, because that first photo is just priceless-look at that roll of fat over his little pants! Oh, I love those photos. But, one of my favorite shoots of all time were this family’s photos last spring. Just beautiful. And now Connor will be 2 years old in a couple weeks! He and Hannah are so good together too. They did not bicker or fight one time. She is an awesome little sister.

For this shoot, we went down to the Dushabe Tea House in Boulder. There are a ton of colorful walls there, and a creek across the street to get some naturey portraits as well. It ended up being sort of a chilly evening, but the kids were braving it well. My wagon did get snatched by some homeless guys, but when I put on my courageous face and marched up to them to demand it back, they were super sweet. Gotta love the people in Boulder:) Really, they were so nice, I felt bad that I even doubted it.

Anyways, beautiful family! I can’t wait to see them again next time.

Awww….that is all I can say for tonight, because I had a super long day and am about to fall asleep at my very cluttered desk right now. But, I havn’t been posting enough lately and need to make a point to get rolling again! So much to put up. More tomorrow perhaps (another busy day of shooting, at least:). I love how they look like they should be smelling the flower, but instead they are just smelling, and loving each other.

On a happy note, I am planning a trip to Spain this summer as well! I can not wait to photograph families and babies in such a beautiful country. Can you even imagine? I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love, meet so many wonderful people, and travel to such cool places. Details about that will be coming soon:)
